“sleeping at home” is a collection of six short films by Lucas Haynes, all shot on 16mm and processed in artist-run labs. The program moves through distorted landscapes, buildings, and drains—grounded in documentary observation before dissolving into abstracted, hallucinatory images. These are films rooted in the everyday: streetscapes, architecture, water, light. But they’re reaching for something beneath the surface—a frequency, a spirit, the dreamlike layer that hums through real places when you stop.

The work is relaxing and sentimental, but visually arresting. Familiar things become unreliable. A landscape shifts. A building breathes. It’s like falling asleep in a park surrounded by close friends, then waking at dusk as everyone packs up to leave.

Each film emerges from tactile, process-driven engagement with analog materials, embracing the unpredictability of hand-processed 16mm. They resist clean narratives, favoring texture, repetition, and atmosphere—an attempt to document not just what a place looks like, but what it feels like to move through it, half-awake.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion about DIY cinemas and artist-run labs, including Spit Lab and Naga Pond in Bangkok—two new community spaces dedicated to underground queer cinema and creating DIY venues in home spaces. We’ll talk about building infrastructure outside institutions, the politics of access, and what it means to make and show work on our own terms

Lucas Haynes

Lucas Haynes is an independent filmmaker and curator based in Bangkok and Yogyakarta, working primarily with analog film. His practice explores the boundaries of cinema through experimental documentary, video installation, and expanded forms incorporating performance, sculpture, and sound. Often inspired by folklore, the spiritual, and the textures of place, his works emerge from a tactile engagement with the city and its architecture.

Lucas sees cinema not as fixed to a building, but as something that spills into the world—often constructing DIY screening spaces that reimagine public infrastructure and challenge conventional ideas of where and how film can be experienced. His projects resist polished endpoints, favoring process, community, and collective authorship over traditional festival frameworks.

He has recently opened Spit Lab, a film lab in Bangkok, where he runs workshops and screenings for the community and hosts visiting artists in residence.

In Melbourne, he remains active in collectives like AFW and Smiles Cinema, contributing to a thriving culture of experimental, artist-run spaces. For Lucas, filmmaking is a way of pausing, listening, and staying in touch with the world.
