ReaRflex and Welcome Lim-Kong Society are delighted to invite projectionist Chang Hsin-Ning to lead this hands-on workshop, with Tzu-An Wu serving as teaching assistant.
This session focuses primarily on 16mm projector operation, but will also introduce Super 8 and Standard 8mm film projection equipment.

Once popular for home entertainment, educational screenings, and community gatherings, 16mm projection embodies a non-commercial cinematic environment. This workshop reclaims that spirit—outside of archival institutions or industrial circuits—and invites everyone to play with 16mm film projection.

Participants will explore three key aspects:
"Everyday Maintenance," "Pre-Screening Preparation," and "Projection Operation."
All necessary film reels, inspection tools, and projection equipment will be provided.
Everyday Maintenance covers the care of both projection equipment and film. From cleaning machines to checking their condition, the session also opens a discussion on home film storage methods to prolong the lifespan of your film prints.

Pre-Screening Preparation focuses on inspecting film conditions: If your reel shows signs of vinegar syndrome, warping, tears, or perforation damage, can it still be projected? How can it be repaired for projection? Participants will practice inspection, logging, repair, and cleaning techniques to ensure smooth projection.

Projection Operation includes threading film through the projector and practicing reel changeovers. Participants will gain a hands-on understanding of how to adjust image and sound and learn the fundamentals of analog film projection.

Participants who own 16mm prints (whether projectable or not) are encouraged to bring them—mounted on a reel or core. An 8mm projector will also be available, so feel free to bring your 8mm films. No film? Just curious about analog projection? You're very welcome to join too!

︎ Projectionist bio:
Chang Hsin-Ning began working as a projectionist in 2008 at Athena Cinema in Athens, Ohio. In addition to regular commercial screenings, he supported the Athens International Film + Video Festival, handling 35mm and 16mm formats for experimental short films.
In 2017, he joined AFS Cinema in Austin, Texas, specializing in dual-projector operations. Upon returning to Taiwan, he worked at the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, helping with film restoration and scanning. He is currently a projectionist at the institute and occasionally involved in experimental film screenings.
