Fur Film Vol. 2: mirror mirror
3-channel 16mm film projections, digital projection
Fur Film is a term invented by the artists: a literal translation of 毛 (fur, rough) and 片 (film). It refers to trivial matters, film dailies, and the fragments that accumulate around the process of filmmaking.
For this project, Erica Sheu, Johan Chang, and Tzu-An Wu each shot two rolls of 16mm film and sent them to one another across their respective cities — Los Angeles, Taipei, and Paris — to create double exposures. Across distance, the collaborators’ physical encounters are inscribed through light exposed onto the film emulsion.
Fur Film Vol. 2: mirror mirror began as a short film project, following Fur Film Vol. 1: I don’t own a cat (2021), which was made with outtakes from each other’s projects. Vol. 2 continues as an ongoing exchange reflecting on diary filmmaking. It meditates on how filmmakers process the mundane, transform it into signs, and begin to mirror one another, creating visual synonyms across time and place.
The installation foregrounds the material process of filmmaking, exhibiting 16mm film loops alongside the projection of the short film.
ARTIST BIO
後照鏡 ЯeaRflex is a Taiwan-based collective formed by three experimental moving-image artists born under water signs. The group operates primarily through online exchange, while also organizing screenings and developing collaborative works. Its founding members are Tzu-An Wu, Erica Sheu, and Johan Chang.
吳梓安 Tzu-An Wu’s practice moves between experimental cinema and its expanded forms. Working with analog film as a site of collage, Wu brings together heterogeneous images, sounds, and texts to examine the construction of cinematic narrative and the self. He holds an MA in Media Studies from The New School, New York, and a BA in Gender and Cultural Studies from NTHU, Taiwan. His works are presented in the forms of screenings, exhibitions, and expanded cinema performances, and have been shown internationally, including BFI Flare (London), IFFR (Netherland), CROSSROADS (San Francisco), Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris, Golden Horse Film Festival (Taiwan), TIDF(Taiwan), Taipei Art Awards, Taiwan Biennial, Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition, Metropolitan Museum of Manila and more. He is currently based in Taipei. ︎tzuanwu.net
徐 璐 Erica Sheu works with photochemical film across short films, expanded cinema, and installation. She explores synesthetic properties of memory with a poetic and tactile apporach. Her films engage with the intergenerational, history and language, individuality within the collective, and Taiwanese identity politics. Her films have shown at Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, and International Film Festival Rotterdam, among others. She had taught personal filmmaking workshops at the Academy Museum, and celluloid film workshops at Mono No Aware, T.A.P.E Los Angeles (housed at Whammy! Analog Media), CalArts among others. She holds an MFA in Film/Video from CalArts. She works and lives in Los Angeles. ︎sheulu.co
張若涵 Johan Chang has worked extensively with documentary film festivals and organizations, alongside a practice in documentary producing. Chang’s work explores personal memory and social relationship, expressive possibilities of image-making, hand-based processes, and diary film. Her work has been exhibited at EXiS, TIDF, Women Make Waves, M+ Hong Kong, and Image Forum Festival. Since 2020, she has co-organized the Taiwan–Japan experimental film screening series Ground Level / Rebel Cinema. Johan is a MFA candidate at Tokyo University of the Arts. She is currently based in Yokohama.
ЯeaRflex’s curated screening programs and collaborative works have been presented by independent organizations and spaces in Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, and France. In 2021, the collective initiated Making Kin((o))!, a DIY and collective-making manifesto that remains a living document under continual revision.
